The IRS announced yesterday that it is granting taxpayers and tax return preparers affected by Hurricane Sandy until November 7 to file returns and accompanying payments that were normally due on October 31.

The relief primarily appliesto businesses whose payroll and excise tax returns and payments are normally due on October 31. The relief is automatic – no action is required by the taxpayer. however, if the taxpayer or the tax practitioner receives a penalty notice for the period, they can contact the the IRS to request penalty abatement due to reasonalbel cause on account of the storm.
